There's nothing pretty or alluring about this place. In fact it's shockingly easy to pass by, and one could live only blocks away and never know of its existence. And that would be a shame.

For lack of a better name I'm simply calling it by what it serves and where it's located: bun thit nuong (and banh xeo, but that made the title way too long), on To Hien Thanh. Simple enough. But hidden behind this veil of straightforwardness lies flavor and pleasure of a different sort altogether. For a few hours each day, from between roughly 11am and 5pm, the owner of said stall dishes out some of the most delicious bun thit nuong and banh xeo this city has yet seen. And for prices that can hardly be beat (a large factor in my flavor equation, granted).

The bun thit nuong is, as my companion would say, ridiculously good. It helps that it's hard to find here in the north, but in my humble opinion it could give even the best places in Hue (or wherever it's from) a run for their money. And it's certainly better than the bland take at Quan An Ngon and the overly-priced mockery at (the now defunct?) Bun Ta. Here, the pork is sweet, tender and filled with meaty flavor. The vegetables are crisp, the herbs are fresh and the noodles are abundant. She doesn't skimp on the roasted peanuts or fried shallots either, which is nice.

And the banh xeo is just as good; albeit a bit of a different beast. It's your classic crispy yellow coconut-rice crepe filled with small sweet shrimp, pieces of lean pork and bean sprouts, served with thin wrappers, a heaping basket of fresh herbs and dipping sauce. One makes for a great light lunch or a decent afternoon snack. I can take down two without blinking and still fit in some fried bananas on the walk home.

In short, this place is freaking awesome. I'd give it six stars if I could, which is probably overkill, but who cares. One crepe currently sets you back around 10,000-12,000 and one bowl of bun is 25,000. She's also got your stock standard selection of sweet sodas and bottles of Bia Ha Noi. There are only a few tables, and seats fill up quick during peak hours, so beware. And enjoy.
